Not Picking Up (Models WITHOUT Brush Control)

PLEASE NOTE: If your are in anyway unsure of any of the steps listed below. Please consult a qualified electrician and always remove the plug from the socket before commencing work.

At the first sign that your Dyson is not picking up as it should check the filters first. Start by examining the pre motor filter (The blue sponge filter in a yellow carrier). If the pre motor filter is dirty then wash it warm soapy water or replace it.

1. To examine the pre motor filter start by depressing the catch at the top of the cyclone top assembly handle and removing it from the Dyson.

2. Carefully pull up the catch located at the bottom of the cyclone's top handle and then rotate the lid backwards.

3. Remove the pre motor filter from it's housing. Separate the blue sponge filter from the yellow carrier and wash both parts thoroughly in warm soapy water. Only refit to your Dyson once both parts have completely dried.

Next, check the post motor filter (Located below the bin). If the post motor filter is dirty it must be replaced, it cannot be washed.

4. Remove the post motor filter lid by inserting a flat bladed screwdriver under the locating tabs at the front and sides of the lid. Use the screwdriver to gently prise the tabs on the post filter lid off the main body.

5. Remove the post filter from it's housing.

6. If the post motor filter is dirty it must be replaced, it cannot be washed.

If both of the filters are clean then follow the next steps to further investigate the problem. (Although the Dyson featured in the pictures below is a DC07, the procedure is exactly the same as for a DC14.)

7. Start by laying your Dyson onto it's back and, using a two pence piece, turn each of the three soleplate fasteners a quarter of a turn in an anti-clockwise direction.

8. Remove the soleplate by prising it, underneath the centre soleplate fastener, away from the cleaner head.

9. Examine the full length of the brush bar and check for objects wrapped around it such as loose threads, hairs, fluff etc. Also, check the inside of the soleplate and clear any blockages, especially where the dirt travels down the small, clear, plastic hose into the Dyson. Check the full length of the the brush bar and check the condition of the belt, look for cuts and excessive stretching.

10. Lay the Dyson onto it's side and remove the internal hose. By first pulling at the point where it is connected next to the U-bend.

11. Then by unwinding the other end from the brush holder. Examine the hose thoroughly and replace it if there are any cuts or tears.

12. Next check for blockages in the valve pipe.

13. If there is still no obvious reason why the Dyson is not picking up then suspect a blocked cyclone assembly. The simplest way to check for this is to empty the bin, roll a small piece of paper (about the size of an envelope) into a ball and place it into the bottom of the bin. Turn the Dyson on and check the movement of the paper ball. If it does not spin around the bin quickly then it is highly likely that the cyclone is blocked. To examine and clean the cyclones, remove the six Torx T15 screws located underneath the pre motor filter.

14. Remove the cyclone upper section.

15. Remove the white cyclone cover from the top of the cyclones and remove any trapped dirt from the seven cyclones.
