The Hoover Company started out as an American floor care manufacturer but also established themselves in the United Kingdom and for most of the early-and-mid-20th century they dominated the electric vacuum cleaner industry. So much so the "hoover" brand name became the name for vacuum cleaners and vacuuming throughout the United Kingdom and Ireland and this has remained the same ever since.
