Dyson Vacuum Cleaners

Dyson has challenged the conventional Hoover monopoly on the vacuum cleaners market.

For many years, before Dyson, the term Hoover was synonymous with vacuum cleaners. So much so, in fact, that many people use the word both to refer to vacuum cleaners and the process of vacuum cleaning a carpet. This is due to the dominance of the Hoover electrical company for most of the 20th century.

More recently, however, a challenger to this dominance has emerged in the form of Dyson. When introduced to the U.K in 1993, Dyson revolutionised the way we think about vacuum cleaners. Utilising patented cyclone technology meant that for the first time, a bag was no longer needed.

Instead of using a bag, these new cyclonic Dyson vacuum cleaners collected dust in a detachable, cylindrical vessel, which could then be emptied.

Despite a relatively expensive price tag, (The original Dyson DC01 was around double the price of conventional vacuum cleaners) it proved to be a huge success. This was largely due to the fact that the Dyson removed the cost and inconvenience of having to replace vacuum cleaner bags on a regular basis.

It has been reported that before introducing his Dyson vacuum cleaners to the mass market, company founder James Dyson attempted to sell this bagless, cyclone technology to some of the major manufacturers. Surprisingly, none of them took him up on this offer, although Hoover later admitted that they had considered doing so, simply to keep the Dyson technology off the market.

Initially, several attempts were made by Hoover and other companies to steal the Dyson cyclonic technology. These were met by successful lawsuits from Dyson, whose products became more and more popular.

In recent times, however, bagless technology has been widely adopted and cyclonic vacuum cleaners are now produced by most manufacturers, not just Dyson. They are now no more expensive than their conventional equivalents, which are becoming less and less common. To most people, Dyson are the original, and remain very popular.
