Burning Smell - Carbon
PLEASE NOTE: If your are in anyway unsure of any of the steps listed below. Please consult a qualified electrician and always remove the plug from the socket before commencing work.
1. Start by detaching the Dyson's cyclone top assembly.
2. Then remove the cyclone /bin assembly.

3. Underneath the cyclone/bin assembly you will find the post motor filter lid. The lid is removed by pulling back the two locating tabs (arrowed).

4. Remove the post motor filter.

5. Using a large flat screwdriver, gently prise the the cyclone top assembly from the main body and then remove the blue pre motor filter.

6. Remove the wheels by placing a large flat screwdriver into the gap between the DC05's body and the wheel. Ensure that the screwdriver is placed as close to the centre as possible before prising the wheel off.

7. Remove the bumper by pulling the two sides apart and sliding it off the body.

8. Using a Torx T15 screwdriver remove the 5 torx screws holding the upper motor cover in place.

9. The upper motor cover can then be lifted off the lower motor cover.

10. Then lift the motor bucket out of the lower motor cover and disconnect the brown (live) wires and the blue (neutral) wires.

11. Using a large flat screwdriver gently prise off the motor bucket top.

12. Then remove the motor seal.

13. Withdraw the DC05 motor by simply pulling it from the motor bucket.

14. Take careful note of the correct wiring connections before disconnecting the motor. Red to brown (live) and black to blue (neutral).

15. Remove the motor bearing mount from the old motor and fit it to the new motor before reassembling the Dyson.

16. When the motor is fully out of the main cleaner body examine the motor for wear or damage. Pay particular attention to the commutator (The copper segments where the carbon brushes contact the motor - red arrow). If the commutator is blackened and heavily scored the motor must be replaced. Also pay attention to the bearings on the motor. The armature shaft should turn easily with the fingers with very little resistance other than the resistance of the carbon brushes touching the commutator ring. If the bearings are stiff or make a grinding noise the motor must be replaced.
Reassembly is a simple matter of reversing the steps listed above.
